| My Blue Plate Special |
1lb of mild or hot sausage ( I used Johnsonville brand)
1 medium onion finely chopped
1/2 green bell pepper finely chopped
1/4 cup of all purpose flour
1/2 tsp of poultry seasoning
1/4 tsp of nutmeg
1 Tbs of Worcestershire sauce
red chili flakes to taste
2 cups of milk (I used 2%)
salt and a lot of black pepper to taste
Note: If you are not a fan of pork sausage, try substituting ground chicken, turkey or beef. Just add more poultry seasoning and some fennel seed to give it that sausage flavor.
Directions:

In a large saute pan, brown sausage with onions and bell pepper. Then add black pepper, poultry seasoning, nutmeg, red chili flakes.
Then add the flour and cook for a few minutes. Finally add the milk and bring to a simmer. Allow gravy to thicken. Taste for seasoning. Adjust seasoning as needed. In a separate pan fix eggs as you like and toast bread. Serve Sausage Gravy over toast. Enjoy. My breakfast is very simple too, that why I don't cook much in the morning,as long as I have a cup of coffee and fresh fruits or a bowl of cereal I'm good to go :) but I do like biscuit and turkey sausage gravy.

Definitely down home comfort food. Love the Worcestershire sauce in there and the nutmeg - that is a surprise! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven' never had biscuits and gravy before. Not sure why I have never ordered it. This sounds easy, and really good!

ReplyDeleteI'm totally a savory breakfast person too. I usually scan the menu for hashbrown's...they take me to my breakfast happy place. I love your sausage gravy! I usually don't order it because I think the white gravy with the brown sausage is not very visually appealing, but your brown gravy looks great over the thick toast!
ReplyDeleteYou know how hotels have those continental breakfasts? They always have biscuits and gravy and I ALWAYS have to get it! :) I LOVE B&G! With or without sausage! However, I always top it with some jam. I don't see any jam on those B&G. :) I am sitting here looking for an idea for Sunday brunch this morning. Think I found it. Thanks! These look delicious!
ReplyDeleteNice comfort food... love this.
ReplyDeleteI usually opt for savory dishes too. Oddly enough, I crave sweet breakfast dishes for dinner, lol! This looks really yummy!
